Want to entertain your kids at home, especially during school holidays? Making home made play dough is one of the most easy way to keep your kids busy creating different shapes, colour and designs that could enhance their imagination, you will never guess what your kids will create next. And what is best thing is that the ingredients can only be found in your kitchen. One advantages in creating your own play dough is that you can customize the colours and the amount of the dough that you can make. Not only that, you can also spend quality time with your kids while making it. Kids will have the idea of how this playful dough is made for less than 10 mins.  

Do you know when was the play dough invented?

According to HowStuffWorks, Play dough was accidentally invented last 1955 by Joseph and Noah McVicker while they are trying to make a wallpaper cleaner. Then it was marketed a year later by a toy manufacturer Rainbow crafts. Since then more than 700 million pounds of play dough have been sold, but the recipe remained secret.

So what's the advantages to make a home made play dough?
  • It is inexpensive to make
  • You can add different colours and scents to customize your dough
  • You can make as many and as much as you want
  • It can last for a month as well when stored in a zip top bag
  • Help add awareness to you kids how things are made

This recipe that we are going to make doesn't require cream of tartar which sometimes difficult to find and another is no cooking required at all! Isn't it great?  It is a pretty straight forward recipe and very handy. Which is very favourable mostly to busy moms like you and me. Hopefully this could help you all out there as well. All you need to do is be imaginative and explorative on how you gonna combine your ingredients e.g. adding scents and glitters or mixing colours. So without further a do here are the ingredients and instructions how to make it.

  • 8 Tablespoon plain flour each bowl
  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil per bowl
  • 2 Tablespoon salt each bowl
  • 1/2 Teaspoon food colouring per bowl
  • 60 ml warm water per bowl

  • Bowls
  • Spoons
  • Cups
  • Measuring spoon

  1. Depending on how many colours you gonna make, use 1 bowl in each colour. Add the dry ingredients.
  2. Put 8 tablespoon of plain flour in each bowl.
  3. Add 2 tablespoon of salt in each bowl.
  4. Now add the wet ingredients using a separate cup/bowl.
  5. Put the 60ml warm water in each cup/bowl.
  6. Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in it.
  7. Then mix 1/2 teaspoon of food colouring and stir.
  8. Now mix the wet ingredients to dry ingredients.
  9. Stir and blend well. You can knead once the wet ingredients are absorbed.
  10. Make sure all the ingredients are mix thoroughly until they formed a dough and once you achieve it, your children can enjoy long hours of playing this wonderful home made dough.
